The Romanian Bucovina Shepherd, also listed by the FCI as the Southeastern European Shepherd, comes from Romania's Bucovina region. It was developed to guard flocks, homes, and rural property against predators and intruders.
This is a large livestock guardian, not a high-energy herding dog. The breed is powerful, calm, courageous, and naturally protective. Its coat is dense and weather-resistant, commonly white with well-defined patches of gray, black, or brindle-toned color.
Ownership requires space, fencing, early socialization, and guardian-breed judgment. A Bucovina Shepherd can be devoted to family, but it is not a casual apartment dog or a breed that should be encouraged toward suspicion.
This breed tends to suit homes looking for a calm, courageous, protective companion, with daily rhythms shaped by moderate energy, high barking, and moderate drooling.

Expect strong alert barking and boundary awareness. Teach controlled responses early.
Use calm, consistent training focused on neutrality, handling, leash control, and recall within fenced spaces.
Dense coat care requires regular brushing and seasonal shedding management.
Most Bucovina Shepherds need steady daily walks, space to move, and guardian-style routine rather than intense sport exercise. Protect joints during growth.
Brush the dense coat several times weekly and more during shedding. Check ears, skin, tail, and feet after outdoor work.
Training should focus on socialization, calm handling, leash control, and neutral responses to visitors. Guardian instincts should be managed, not amplified.
Use a measured large-breed diet with controlled puppy growth. Keep adult weight lean to reduce stress on hips and elbows.
