The Gascon Saintongeois is a French scenthound breed with two varieties: Grand Gascon Saintongeois and Petit Gascon Saintongeois. The Grand variety was traditionally used for larger game, while the Petit was selected for smaller game such as hare. Despite the name, the Petit is smaller than the Grand but not a toy or small companion dog.
The breed has a short, tight coat that is white with black patches and may show black ticking. Tan markings appear above the eyes and on parts of the head and legs. It is a pack hound with a strong nose, voice, and a sociable but hunting-focused temperament.
A Gascon Saintongeois is best suited to hunters, rural homes, or experienced hound owners. Coat care is easy, but exercise, secure containment, recall management, and ear care are essential.
This breed tends to suit homes looking for a sociable, calm, enduring companion, with daily rhythms shaped by high energy, high barking, and low drooling.

The Gascon Saintongeois is not a practical apartment breed. Even the Petit variety remains a working hound with voice, scent drive, and outdoor needs.
Expect baying and vocal excitement. The breed was developed for pack hunting, so vocal behavior should be managed through setting and work.
Use reward-based hound training, long lines, secure areas, and realistic recall expectations around wildlife.
Brush weekly and check ears, paws, nails, and skin after outdoor activity.
Most Gascon Saintongeois need long outdoor exercise and scent work. Hunting, tracking, safe running, and structured hound activities are better outlets than short walks.
The short tight coat is simple to maintain. Check ears, paws, nails, and skin after work in brush, wet ground, or rough terrain.
Use rewards, long lines, secure areas, and patient repetition. The breed's pack-hound background means dog sociability may be strong, but wildlife recall needs management.
Feed for a lean working hound and adjust portions according to activity. Avoid excess weight and discuss bloat prevention with a veterinarian.
