The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is an old French scenthound from the Gascony region and one of the classic hounds of southern France. It was bred for pack hunting, traditionally on large game, and is known for a deep voice, strong nose, and steady endurance.
The coat is short and dense, white heavily mottled with black to create a slate-blue appearance, with black patches and tan markings. Its long ears, large frame, and pack-hound background make it a very different prospect from a typical family pet breed.
This breed suits hunters, rural homes, and experienced hound owners who can provide space, scent work, and secure containment. It is usually sociable with other dogs, but its voice, size, and hunting drive make it a poor match for most apartments.
This breed tends to suit homes looking for a calm, sociable, enduring companion, with daily rhythms shaped by high energy, high barking, and moderate drooling.

The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is not a practical apartment breed. It needs space, scent work, and a setting where hound voice is manageable.
Expect baying and vocal excitement around scent. This is normal working behavior for the breed.
Use reward-based hound training, long lines, secure areas, and realistic recall expectations around game.
Brush weekly and check ears, paws, nails, and skin after outdoor work.
Most Grand Bleu de Gascogne need long outdoor exercise and scent work. Hunting, tracking, safe running, or structured hound activities are better than short walks.
The short coat is easy to brush, but long ears need regular checks. Inspect paws, skin, nails, and ears after field work or wet ground.
Use patient hound training with rewards, long lines, and secure fencing. The breed's nose and pack-hound independence make off-leash reliability difficult around wildlife.
Feed measured portions for a large active hound. Keep the dog lean and discuss bloat risk with a veterinarian.
