The Peruvian Hairless Dog, also called the Peruvian Inca Orchid or Perro sin Pelo del Peru, is an ancient Peruvian breed recognized in hairless and coated varieties. The hairless variety is the best known, but coated dogs are part of the breed and may appear in the same breeding population.
The FCI standard divides the breed into small, medium, and large sizes, from about 10 to 26 inches at the shoulder. Hairless dogs have exposed skin that may be dark, light, solid, or mottled, sometimes with sparse hair on the head, feet, or tail. Coated dogs have a short, smooth coat and may come in many colors, but merle is not accepted in the FCI standard.
This breed can be affectionate and alert with its family, often reserved with strangers. Care is unusual: hairless dogs need sun protection, cold protection, gentle skin care, and dental monitoring because hairlessness is linked with missing teeth. Coated dogs need more normal coat care but share the same breed temperament and structure.
This breed tends to suit homes looking for a affectionate, alert, reserved companion, with daily rhythms shaped by moderate energy, moderate barking, and low drooling.

Peruvian Hairless Dogs are often alert and reserved. Teach calm observation and avoid forcing stranger interaction.
Use gentle rewards and gradual socialization. Pressure can make a sensitive dog more suspicious or avoidant.
Hairless dogs need skin care rather than brushing; coated dogs need light brushing. Both need dental and nail care.
Most adults need moderate daily exercise with walks, play, and safe running in suitable weather. Avoid harsh sun, cold, and abrasive surfaces for hairless dogs.
Hairless dogs need sunscreen or shade, cold-weather clothing, gentle bathing, and skin monitoring. Coated dogs need light brushing. Nails, teeth, and ears need routine care in both varieties.
Use patient reward-based training and careful socialization. The breed can be reserved, so calm exposure to visitors, handling, and new places matters.
Feed measured portions for the dog's size variety. Ask a veterinarian about dental health, skin condition, and maintaining lean body weight.
