The Stabyhoun, also spelled Stabijhoun, comes from Friesland in the Netherlands. Historically it was a multipurpose rural dog: a family companion, farm helper, watchdog, and hunting dog able to point and retrieve. That mixed background gives the breed a calmer, more thoughtful style than many high-octane gundogs, but it still needs daily work and human involvement.
The breed is medium sized with a medium-length coat, feathering, and a mostly black-and-white pattern, though brown-and-white and orange-and-white are also recognized. The coat should look natural rather than heavily sculpted, with regular brushing to prevent tangles around feathered areas.
Stabyhouns are often affectionate, sensitive, and steady with their own families. They do best with patient training, early socialization, and moderate but consistent exercise. Because the breed is rare, responsible breeder selection and health testing matter.
This breed tends to suit homes looking for a gentle, steady, affectionate companion, with daily rhythms shaped by moderate energy, moderate barking, and low drooling.

Apartment life can work with enough exercise and enrichment, but the breed is more comfortable when outdoor access and routine training are easy.
The Stabyhoun can alert as a watchdog but should not be frantic. Socialization and rewarding calm check-ins help keep barking useful rather than excessive.
Gentle reward-based training fits the breed. Teach recall, calm greetings, handling, and household boundaries with patience.
Brush the medium coat weekly and check feathering after outdoor work. Seasonal shedding may require extra brushing.
Most Stabyhouns need at least 60 minutes of daily activity, with retrieving, scent games, swimming, walks, or training. They usually prefer steady involvement over frantic exercise.
Brush weekly and more often during shedding periods. Check feathering, ears, tail, and feet after outdoor work because burrs and mats can form there.
Use patient reward-based training. The breed can be sensitive, so calm consistency, early socialization, recall, and polite watchdog behavior are more effective than pressure.
Feed measured meals for a medium active dog and keep body condition lean. Discuss joint, elbow, or rare-breed health screening with a veterinarian or responsible breeder.
