The Yakutian Laika comes from the Sakha, or Yakutia, region of Russia, where northern dogs were used for sled work, hunting, and close cooperation with people in severe cold. FCI recognizes the breed as Yakutskaya Laika.
This is a hardy northern spitz with a thick double coat, erect or semi-erect ears, a plumed tail, and strong endurance. Compared with some hunting laikas, the Yakutian Laika is often more social and cooperative, but it is still an active working breed that needs movement, training, and companionship.
The breed suits owners who can provide cold-weather activity, regular grooming, and structured exercise. It is not ideal for hot climates, sedentary homes, or owners who want a low-shedding dog. Without enough work, a Yakutian Laika may become vocal, restless, or destructive.
This breed tends to suit homes looking for a friendly, hardy, energetic companion, with daily rhythms shaped by high energy, high barking, and low drooling.

Apartment life is difficult unless the owner provides serious daily exercise, cool resting areas, and barking management.
Yakutian Laikas can be vocal and alert. Exercise, training, and calm routines are needed before barking becomes a habit.
Use rewards, consistency, and practical outlets such as pulling foundations, recall games, and cooperative handling.
Frequent brushing is essential, especially during coat blows. The coat protects against cold but creates major household shedding.
Most Yakutian Laikas need 90 minutes or more of daily activity, especially in cool weather. Hiking, sled-style sports, skijoring, canicross, long walks, training, and secure play fit the breed better than short casual outings.
Brush the double coat several times weekly and daily during shedding seasons. Check paws, nails, ears, and coat after snow, mud, or trail work, and provide shade and cooling in warm weather.
Use reward-based training with early socialization, recall practice, leash manners, and calm handling. The breed can be cooperative but still has northern-dog independence and may be vocal.
Feed a measured diet for an active medium working dog. Adjust portions around winter activity, pulling sports, or reduced exercise to keep the dog lean.
